Psychometric Properties

Reliability

Internal consistency reliability coefficients were estimated for all subscales, and the overall scores were estimated separately for study 1 and study 2. Overall social-emotional comprehension scores had reliability estimates of 0.93 in study 1 and 0.94 in study 2. Other subscales had reliability estimates ranging from 0.78 to 0.88.
Test-retest reliabilities were also estimated for all scores, with an interval of six months. Overall scores had test-retest reliabilities of 0.71 in study 1 and 0.75 in study 2. Other subscales had test-retest reliability estimates ranging from 0.57 to 0.70) (McKown et al., 2016).

Validity

Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was used to support a four-factor structure, with factors corresponding to the four hypothesized subscales. Separate CFAs were conducted in each study, and evidence was consistent across studies (McKown et al., 2016).
There is evidence, based on a series of regressions, that the overall social-emotional comprehension score is related to a variety of criterion measures, and the direction of these relationships is consistent with theory. Social-emotional comprehension scores are positively related to measures of social-emotional behavior, academic competence and social acceptance. This includes positive and statistically significant relationships with the social skills and academic competence domains of the SSIS (Gresham & Elliott, 2008), the DESSA-Mini (Naglieri, LeBuffe, & Shapiro, 2011), and the AIMSweb reading and math assessments (Pearson Education, 2012). Evidence for convergent and discriminant validity was collected by estimating the relationships between the four subscores of the SELweb and four subscores of the same domains constructed from alternative indicators. A series of structural equation models were estimated to collect evidence supporting the fact that there were significant and positive relationships between the same domains (regardless of the indicators) and null relationships between different domains.
